The Fourth of July is not only the national holiday of the land of the free and the home of the brave. It is the mindset of people who have fought and earned the right to be called Americans – to share a commitment to a set of values and ideals and celebrate in the truest of American patriotism, tradition and fashion.
For me, it is also a time to celebrate and share precious time with friends and family, usually with some kind of outdoor cooking, summer salads made with fresh vegetables from our gardens, all sorts of outdoor games and various types of patriotic music, a Fourth of July Parade, and fireworks to top off the evening.
In the words of Franklin D. Roosevelt – “IN THE TRUEST SENSE, FREEDOM CANNOT BE BESTOWED; IT MUST BE ACHIEVED.”
For this reason, we show our colors, and while these friendly colors blend well with each other, they’re also our national colors and represent important values. Red, for hardiness and valor. White, which represents purity and innocence. The blue is for vigilance, perseverance, and justice. We wave our flag as a symbol of freedom, whereas the flag’s 13 red and white stripes represent the 13 original colonies and its 50 white stars on a blue background represent the 50 states. We attend parades with colorful floats, marching bands, and veterans’ processions that wind through the streets of many cities, creating a vibrant display of national pride. We also show our pride and gratitude to our military and all who have fought and continue to fight for our country.
